Characterizing the effects of repetitive head trauma in female soccer athletes for prevention of mild traumatic brain injury

    Get PDF
As participation in women’s soccer continues to grow and the longevity of female athletes’ careers continues to increase, prevention of mTBI in women’s soccer has become a major concern for female athletes as the long-term risks associated with a history of mTBI are well documented. Among women’s sports, soccer exhibits the highest concussion rates, on par with those of men’s football at the collegiate level. Head impact monitoring technology has revealed that “concussive hits” occurring directly before symptomatic injury are not predictive of mTBI, suggesting that the cumulative effect of repetitive head impacts experienced by collision sport athletes should be assessed. Neuroimaging biomarkers have proven to be valuable in detecting brain changes that occur before neurocognitive symptoms in collision sport athletes. Quantifying the relationship between changes in these biomarkers and the cumulative mechanical load experienced by female soccer athletes may prove valuable in developing measures to prevent mTBI. This work pairs functional magnetic resonance imaging with head impact monitoring to assess changes in cerebrovascular reactivity and resting state functional connectivity in female soccer athletes and to test whether the observed changes can be attributed to the cumulative mechanical load experienced by female athletes participating in high school soccer both transiently over a season and chronically over several years of play. Marked cerebrovascular reactivity changes over a season of play were observed in female soccer athletes, relative both to non-collision sport control measures and pre-season measures. These changes persisted 4-5 months after the season ended and recovered by 8 months after the season. Segregation of the total soccer cohort into cumulative loading groups revealed that population-level cerebrovascular reactivity changes were driven by athletes experiencing high cumulative loads in short periods of time and that focusing on impacts 50g or higher helped increase identification of individuals with cerebrovascular reactivity decreases using head impact data. Resting state functional connectivity assessments revealed hypoconnectivity in soccer athletes as compared to non-collision sport control athletes. This hypoconnectivity was more pronounced in between network connections as opposed to within network connections. However, resting state functional connectivity was not altered over a season of play in soccer athletes, suggesting that the observed differences between soccer athletes and control athletes were due to long term exposure to chronic exposure to mild repetitive head trauma over several years of play

The concept of exponential function in the context of Vergnaud Theory

    Get PDF
In order to teach exponential functions as well as to study the process of conceptualization through Vergnaud Theory of Conceptual Fields, a didactic sequence was designed. The sequence was tested with four groups of students [between 15-16 years old] of a secondary school. The analysis suggested the existence of an escalation in the conceptualization of the exponential function linked to representational systems, ranging from linear schemes, to exponential. However, this escalation did not occur in all representational systems at the very same time.Fil: Otero, Maria Rita. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. From Powers to Exponential Function

    Get PDF
The construction of the exponential function of a real exponent from the definition of the powers of a real number, and its properties, requires the notion of successions, a decimal approximation of a rational number, convergence, and limit of a function. In Argentina, this construction would exceed what could be taught at the secondary level, but it provides advanced students of teachers in mathematics, and teachers in practice, the possibility of discussing what happens in the case of irrational exponents of the type aπ, or discuss the validity of the properties of this type of power.Fil: Sureda Figueroa, Diana Patricia.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

The development and administration of mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 are seeing lower numbers of COVID-19 cases and fatalities among fully vaccinated, immunocompetent adults. We present a case of fatal COVID-19 pneumonia in a heart transplant recipient who had received two doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recommended additional doses

A praxeological model of reference related to costs calculation: comparison with the ones developed in a research and study path at university level

    Get PDF
This work fits within a wider research whose general objective is teaching mathematics to non-mathematicians at the university, taking central assumptions of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD). This work proposes a praxeological model of reference related to a micro-entrepreneurship costs calculation in comparison with the effectively developed model. The generative question How to calculate micro-entrepreneurship costs? links mathematical and economic praxeologies. This model allows to go through a part of the study programme of a university calculus course.Fil: Salgado, Diana Patricia. Universidad Nacional del Sur; ArgentinaFil: Otero, Maria Rita. Attitudes of Pedagogy Research in the framework of the TAD: analysis at three high schools

    Get PDF
In the theoretical framework of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic based on (N = 95) protocols of math students, who participated in a Research and Study Path (RSP), the attitudes of pedagogy of research and questioning of world (problematization, herbartian, procognitive and exoteric) were analyzed. Multivariate analysis techniques were used to describe the relationship between the attitudes, the institution and the kind of pedagogy pointed out. A set of categories were developed, and a classification and a typology were opted. The results show the necessity of a change in traditional pedagogy because a big amount of students have not expressed attitudes related to the pedagogy of research and questioning the world.Fil: Donvito, Angel Eduardo. Description of attitudes belonging to the Research Pedagogy and the World Questioning in high school

    Get PDF
In the framework of Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD) the attitudes that characterize the Paradigm of Questioning the World are described and analyzed in high school: problematization, herbartian, procognitive, exoteric and ordinary encyclopedic. These attitudes are defined by the ATD as necessary for the development of an RSP; within the paradigm of questioning, which teleology is the building of democratic and critics citizens. The study 1 was made with a group of students who studied mathematics during two years from an educational organization point of view focused on Research and Study Path (RSP). It was designed and implemented a RSP on the question “Which is the best savings plan to generate the higher amount of incomes at a low risk?”Fil: Donvito, Angel Eduardo. Study and research in teaching mathematics in two high schools.

    Get PDF
This work describes and analyzes the dialectic study and research, during implementation of Study and Research Path (SRP), in two high school courses. We analyzed over more than eight hundred protocols that generated the responses of (N = 75) students. The inquiry started with the question: ?Which is the best savings plan to generate the greatest amount of income with a bank deposit that pays interest?? for which the students did not have an immediate response. That is to say, they did not know with what mathematical knowledge, or extra-mathematical, they could approach it. The analysis shows that implementing this type of teaching in an institution with previous experience in this paradigm works better than in one that lacks of prior experience.Fil: Sureda Figueroa, Diana Patricia.
